What to Wear When Visiting Temples in Colombo

Colombo’s religious diversity is one of the city’s greatest strengths. A single tour may pass Buddhist and Hindu temples, a Catholic church and one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed mosques.

These are active places of worship, so respectful clothing and behaviour matter.

Cover shoulders and knees

Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. A lightweight shirt, long skirt, loose trousers or longer shorts can work well in Colombo’s warm weather.

Carrying a light scarf or wrap can be useful, but it is better not to rely on a small scarf if the location expects fuller coverage.

Be ready to remove footwear

Visitors may need to remove shoes before entering Buddhist or Hindu temple areas. Socks may also need to be removed in certain places.

Choose footwear that is easy to take off and carry. The ground can become hot in direct sunlight, so move carefully.

Photography etiquette

Do not photograph worshippers closely without permission. Avoid turning your back toward sacred statues for casual selfies when local etiquette discourages it.

Flash photography may be prohibited, and access to certain areas can change during ceremonies.

Behaviour inside religious places

Speak quietly, follow posted instructions and listen to the people responsible for the site. Do not touch religious objects unless clearly invited.

At mosques or churches, services may take priority over tourist access. A respectful tour operator will never pressure staff to admit visitors during restricted periods.

Check opening hours

Some Hindu temples close during part of the afternoon and reopen later. Religious events can also alter normal visiting hours.

Your itinerary should remain flexible so that sacred places are visited at appropriate times and with the respect they deserve.
